Professional Stucco Painting Services in Minnesota

Stucco is not regular paint territory. The surface is porous, textured, and moves with temperature. Standard exterior paint cracks within two or three years on stucco because it cannot flex. The right coating bonds to the stucco, breathes when needed, and stretches when the wall expands and contracts. That is why stucco painting is a specialty service, not just exterior painting on a different surface.

Cowboy Painting LLC has been painting stucco in Minnesota for over 30 years. We work on full house repaints, color changes, crack repair, and refresh jobs where the stucco is solid but the paint has faded. Most clients come to us when their old stucco paint starts chalking, fading, or cracking, which usually happens 8 to 15 years after the previous paint job depending on conditions.

Stucco painting in Minnesota is harder than in warmer states. Freeze-thaw cycles open hairline cracks every winter. The wrong paint traps moisture inside the wall, causing bigger problems than just appearance. We use breathable elastomeric coatings that let the wall release moisture while keeping water out. This is the difference between a stucco job that lasts 10 years and one that fails in three.

Section 01

Stucco Recoating and Color Updates

A full stucco recoat starts with cleaning. We pressure wash the surface at lower pressure than siding, since high pressure can damage stucco. After the wall dries, we inspect every square foot for hairline cracks, larger cracks, missing patches, and areas where the stucco has separated from the substrate. Loose pieces are removed and patched with stucco compound. Hairline cracks get filled with elastomeric crack filler. Larger cracks need stucco repair before any paint goes on.

Color changes on stucco need more thought than siding. Stucco texture absorbs paint differently across the surface, so the color depth depends on coverage. Light to dark color changes almost always need two heavy coats of elastomeric to look even. Dark to light needs a primer coat plus two finish coats. We bring sample boards on stucco texture, not flat boards, so you see how the color reads against the actual surface texture before committing.

Elastomeric coatings are thicker than regular paint. They go on with a heavy nap roller or sometimes sprayed and back-rolled. Application matters because elastomeric is supposed to fill hairline cracks as it cures. Spread too thin, the cracks come back through within a year. Applied at the right thickness, the coating bridges cracks up to about 1/16 inch wide. We apply at manufacturer thickness specs every time, not eyeballing it to stretch the bucket further.

Section 02

Stucco Crack Repair and Patching

Hairline cracks are normal in stucco. Most exterior stucco walls in Minnesota develop them within five to ten years from settling and freeze-thaw stress. Hairline cracks under 1/16 inch can usually be sealed with elastomeric coating during repaint. Bigger cracks need actual repair before painting. We fill structural cracks with stucco patch compound, blend the texture to match surrounding stucco, and let it cure before any paint goes on. Painting over an unfilled large crack just hides it temporarily.

Larger damage, missing chunks, or stucco that has separated from the substrate needs more work. We remove loose material, apply a bonding agent to the substrate, and rebuild the stucco in layers. Texture matching is the hardest part of stucco repair. Sand finish, dash finish, lace texture, and smooth all look different and require different application techniques. We match the existing texture as close as possible, which is usually invisible after paint goes on. Bad texture matching shows through paint forever.

Some stucco damage points to a deeper problem. Cracks running diagonally from window corners often mean foundation movement. Spider cracks all over a wall sometimes mean moisture getting behind the stucco. We can paint over these and they will look fine for a year or two, but the underlying issue keeps causing problems. When we see this, we tell you. Sometimes the right answer is calling a stucco contractor or foundation specialist before painting, even though it costs more upfront. Painting over structural problems wastes the paint money.

Section 03

Why Stucco Paint Quality Matters in Minnesota

Minnesota stucco walls fight three things. Freeze-thaw cycles open cracks. Snow piling against the bottom of walls drives moisture in. Sun fades the surface color. Cheap acrylic paint loses to all three within a few years. Quality elastomeric coatings handle all three. They flex with temperature, seal water out, and resist UV fading much longer. The product cost is higher per gallon, but the labor cost is the same and the result lasts 8 to 12 years instead of 3 to 5.

Breathability matters as much as flexibility. Stucco walls absorb some moisture from rain and humidity, then release it back as the wall dries. Coatings that seal too tight trap moisture inside the wall, leading to efflorescence, blistering, and stucco failure. The coatings we use are vapor permeable, meaning they keep liquid water out while letting water vapor escape. This is the technical difference between elastomeric exterior paint and elastomeric waterproofer, and it matters for long term wall health.

Color choice affects stucco performance more than people think. Dark colors absorb more heat, expand more in summer, and stress the coating faster. Light colors reflect heat and last longer in Minnesota sun. We do not refuse dark stucco colors when clients want them, but we recommend going one shade lighter than the sample for southern exposures. Heat damage on dark colored stucco shows up as fading in the second or third summer. Lighter shades hold their color years longer in the same conditions.
